Chapter 261
I tried my best to keep busy and avoid allowing my mind to linger on her absence for too long. But it was proving to be a useless endeavor.
Knock. Knock. Knock.
I let out a long breath, secretly hoping that it wasn’t Olivia. With Evelyn gone, she had been going out of
her way to ensure that I wasn’t alone for too long.
‘Last time I checked, we weren’t fucking five years old,’ my wolf grumbled.
I’m sure she meant well by it, but it was becoming a bit much.
“Come in,” I called out.
Thankfully, it was Henri. He came bustling through the door with his usual tablet and pile of papers in his hands. The poor guy looked as disheveled as I felt.
“What is it, Henri?”
“Sir, I’m gonna be honest,” he started. “I’ve never once doubted my skills when it came to sorting through data. But I just can’t seem to locate Richard Gravens in any of our lists.”
I sat up straight. “So, what you’re telling me is that you couldn’t find him anywhere?”
Henro shook his head in defeat. “Not a single trace.”
My brows furrowed. “Could it have been that his body was overlooked? There were many who had been torn to literal pieces,” I suggested.
“Not to pat myself on the back, sir. But I personally took it upon myself to go through every single fatality
after the battle.”
“You know I don’t doubt your work, Henri. But there has to be some reasonable explanation as to why Richard’s body is not among the others that had fallen,” I explained.
“Sir, even if he had been torn to literal pieces, there would have been his DNA found at the battle grounds. My team was thorough in their sweep.”
This was insane. “Where the hell is Richard Gravens then?”
There had to be some kind of reasonable explanation for this. For crying out loud, Olivia had openly announced the loss of her mate. It had to have happened during the battle, because why else would she have been out at that field anyway?
Henri sat down in one of the chairs across from me and proceeded to rattle out a bunch of theories.
“Okay, one guess is that Richard’s body and/or remains, were dragged too far back into the wooded area for the team to be able to find them,” he suggested.

“Very possible.”
“Another thought is that maybe Richard had been injured so extensively that he needed to be quickly transported out of the area.”
I scrunched my nose in simmering doubt. “But even if that was the case, surely Gravens would have shown up in the reports and the data listings. Wouldn’t he?”
Henri nodded. “Yeah, you’re right. He likely would have,” he muttered. “Well, my only other theory is that Richard Gravens isn’t dead at all.”
I stared back at Henri while his words took a full minute to process. “Then what the hell was Olivia doing at those battlegrounds in the first place?”
It was hard to argue with the data Henri had gathered. This guy wasn’t known for ever making mistakes when it came to his work. Which led me to believe that it could very well have been Olivia who was
mistaken.
But there again, how could she just have assumed that her husband-her own mate-had been killed and not be one hundred percent certain of it?
This meant that I needed to find Olivia and drag her in for a serious talk. I needed answers, because I was convinced that there was quite a bit that she wasn’t telling me.
“I’m still determined to find out what happened to Gravens,” I said. “If Olivia doesn’t end up giving us some real answers, then I’m going to reach out to someone who can.”
