Chapter 262

Evelyn’s POV

I finally finished unpacking the last of my boxes I’d packed during the move. I’d chosen to move back into my mother’s old room, wanting to have that connection. And I truly needed it at a time like this.

I hadn’t meant to let my resolve slip so easily with Katya. I’d spent years being the punchline to every single one of their taunting jokes and cutting remarks. They believed me to be nothing more than a

doormat.

But they saw who I really was-what I really was. I’d never seen my stepmother’s eyes grow so wide in fear before. And to think that I was the one who caused it.

The corner of my mouth pulled into a smug smile at the thought.

Just one more night, I thought to myself.

One more night of having to endure the injustice and torture of having to put up with my stepfamily. After tomorrow morning, they’d all be gone.

Was it frightening that I didn’t feel an ounce of remorse? Maybe.

But I was more upset and annoyed over the destruction and damage they caused to the pack with their obscene spending habits. They had to leave.

Beneath the stress and anxiety of having to figure out a way to restore this pack to its once former glory, I was excited. I felt as though I was standing on the edge of something new and exciting.

A new beginning. A new era of my mother’s work that I would be carrying out.

I just wished that Kane was actually there with me. I knew that his opinion and ideas would have been valuable at times like this.

Having finished unpacking my things, I glanced around the room and took a mental note of what I had and what I still needed. In the meantime, I left the bedroom and made my way back to my mother’s old

home office.

There was still so much paperwork that needed to be sorted; I wasn’t even sure where to start. I sat down in the large, leather-bound chair and began sifting through the letters one at a time.

I had briefly told one of the staff members that I was planning on taking my dinner alone. I had no desire

to sit in the dining room amongst the very people who made my life a living hell for so many years.

And given the current circumstances, I could only assume that both Katya and Flynn would do everything in their power to get on my good side. It wasn’t going to happen.

By the time I got through half of the pile of notices, the sun had already set below the tree line. I rubbed the ache from my eyes and sat back.

Knock. Knock, Knock.

My eyes flickered over to the door. My stomach churned. Oh, boy.

“What is it?” I called out.

The door opened and in came my father. The man was stoic and stiff as a living statue. Without a word, his eyes glanced around the room as though he were seeing it for the first time in over a decade.

I wouldn’t have been surprised if that was truly the case.

“What?” I asked bluntly, breaking the silence.

My father pursed his lips and lowered his gaze to me. “I came here to inquire about the drama that took place back in Katya’s room.”

“Oh, is that right?” I asked passively. “And here, I thought you wanted to talk about something actually important.”

He let out a muffled snarl under his breath. “Surely you aren’t serious about throwing out your own

siblings-”

I clenched my jaw yet kept my. “Those people are not my family. Never were, in fact. The only reason they were ever here was because you brought that terrible woman into this house.”

His eyes grew wide as his features twisted with disbelief and indignation. “Now hold on-”

“I know about all the affairs you had while you were still married to Mom,” I told him. “The moment she left us, you took everything she built and ran it straight into the ground. Well, the second I found that hidden will of hers, I made a promise to both her and myself that I would do everything in power to save this pack.”

My anger was coursing through me, and I could feel my Alpha surging up to the surface. Again, I could feel my eyes glowing their menacing shade of silver. My father went still as a small smirk played on his lips.

“Oh, I get it. So, that’s the reason why you’ve suddenly decided to grow a spine,” he snickered. “You’re finally pregnant. Well, at least you managed to succeed in the one thing I demanded,” he said briskly.

I let out a lethal snarl and slowly stood up from my chair. “I’m. Not. Pregnant.”

Slowly, I watched my father lose all traces of his amusement. Instead, a sour look of incredulity took its place across his face. “That’s impossible,” he whispered. “That would mean…”

I tilted my head. “Yes, as fate would have it. Kane turned out to be my mate. And during that battle against the rogues, he nearly lost his life, but I managed to save him just in the nick of time.”

He struggled to regain his resolve. “Well, if that’s truly the case, then I’m rather surprised your mate allowed you to leave the pack.”

I narrowed my eyes. “Not that it’s any of your damn business, but Kane doesn’t have any say over my
