Chapter 55

Alexander’s POV

A date?

I stand as Kane expresses how Evelyn and him must retire for the night, noting the way that she blinks at him. Her bewilderment is not lost on me.

“I understand,” I say, sliding my hands into my pockets. “You two need to get some rest.”

I then look at Kane, putting on a smirk as I study his tightened features.

“Have a nice date,” I offer.

Kane hums in response but says nothing more. He begins to lead Evelyn away, but she is more considerate than her so-called husband.

“Goodnight, Alexander,” she rushes out. “I’ll be sure to say goodbye before you leave tomorrow!”

I plant a smile on my face, giving a half wave. “Goodnight, Evie.”

Standing alone, I watch as Kane and Evelyn pass through the double doors, closing them once they’re inside. Immediately, my smile drops from my face.

Instead, my jaw is set, my gaze hard against the closed door.

I count in my head, noting the minutes that I allow to tick by. Once I’m certain that Kane and Evelyn are likely back in their own room, I straighten the lapels of my suit and head back inside.

I’m silent as I walk down the halls, my steps quick. Soon, I arrive at the study where I know my father is currently taking care of some last minute arrangements before bed. Sure enough, I enter to find him sitting in one of the armchairs.

“Ah, Alexander,” he says as I come in and close the door behind me. “I was wondering where you’d gone off to.”

“Just getting some fresh air,” I state, crossing the room to stand closer,

“I see,” my father says, studying me for a moment. However, he then moves on. “I was just checking my email and getting a few updates on the forefront.”

“Everything alright?” I ask, rather half heartedly.

My father waves me off, “No use in discussing business now,” he insists, “We’ll address it once we’re home. Speaking of which, are you ready to leave tomorrow?”

I click my tongue at my father’s question, choosing to sit in the armchair across from him,

“Actually, father,” I begin. “I was hoping I could stay behind and reside here a little longer. Just to…keep an eye on things. If that’s alright with you.”

My father gives a slight chuckle, again scanning my face and demeanor. I remain calm under his gaze, showing him there’s nothing to find or question.

“Alright,” he finally says. Then he nods with more enthusiasm. “Yes, I think that would be appropriate.”

A small smile appears on my lips.

“Thank you, father.”

Kane’s POV

“Kane,” Evelyn says once more, shaking her head as she stares up at me, “What do you mean we’re going on a date? Were you just saying that to annoy Alexander?”

I snort at her question, wanting to ask why that would annoy him. However, I already know the answer to that. So instead, I leave it alone.

“No,” I begin. “I meant what I said – we’re going on a date tomorrow.”

“W-what?” Evelyn stammers as we continue down the hallway. My arm is still around her and she seems too stunned to notice.

“Why?” she asks. “What’s the point?”

“What do you mean?” I ask, keeping my voice low in case anyone may be listening. “We’re husband and wife, Meaning we should be going out on dates. It’s normal.”

Evelyn scoffs. “Oh please,” she says, seeming to follow my lead as she also quiets her voice.

“Kane, we -”

I stop her as we’ve reached our bedroom door, turning her so she has to look at me. Her eyes widen, likely at how easily I move her. However, she’s quick to slide a scowl back on her face.

“Don’t fight me on this one, little wolf,” I say between my teeth. “Just for once – go along with it.”

The crease between her brows deepens as Evelyn stares at me, seeming to search my eyes. However, I don’t blink, showing her there’s nothing to find.
