Chapter 76

Bianca fumes at this, sneering at me. “Why you little bitch -”

“Enough,” Kane orders, making everyone freeze and fall silent. “That’s enough. Everyone out – the show’s over.”

Taking their Alpha’s order, the pack members begin to filter out of the room, but Bianca tries to linger behind. However, Kane shakes his head, dismissing her too. She scowls but listens, and I make sure to let her walk ahead before I begin to follow.

“Not you, little wolf.”

Kane’s words stop me, causing me to turn back to him as the door falls shut and Kane and I are left alone. We don’t say anything for a moment – just face one another and share a hard stare.

“What? Are you going to lecture me for what I said to Bianca?” I ask him finally. “I was just standing up for myself. Isn’t that what a Luna should do?”

“I don’t care about that,” he tells me, saying nothing more.

“What then? Josie and Bianca just ambushed me with this whole ‘public training’ thing,” I tell him, slightly frustrated. “I thought I was going to be working with a trainer alone.”

“Bianca isn’t completely wrong,” Kane states. “Seeing you train and witnessing your strength does help pack trust.”

I scoff, shaking my head. There he goes, defending Bianca once again.

“It’s a matter of proving yourself,” Kane insists.

“Yeah, sure,” I reply flatly. “I got it.”

“The pack has their doubts. They all think you’d be stronger because of your work with the feral wolves and the influence you have,” he tells me. “Not to mention your Silver blood. It should be inevitable.”

I swallow, shaking my head. He’s right… it should be inevitable. Only, my father made sure that my power was ripped from me years ago and never had the chance to fully develop.

If it wasn’t for him and the pills he’d fed me, then I’d be the powerful wolf they all expected. But I don’t say any of that to Kane. I can’t.

“It doesn’t work like that,” I say instead, my voice quiet.

In response, Kane sighs.

“Regardless, your weakness is starting to affect and damage the pack’s image,” he states, his words stinging. “So I will be personally taking over your training.”

“What?” I ask abruptly. “No, no. Absolutely not.”

“So you’d rather I let Josie keep training you and let her kick your ass in front of the whole pack instead?” Kane asks, causing me to scowl at him.

“You have no other choice,” Kane continues. “If you train with me then you can train privately, and I will make sure you get stronger. For the sake of the pack and your wolf, I’m your best option.”

I stare at him, still glaring at him. I’m weary at his willingness to offer his help, feeling distrustful after the kiss incident. Was this just another way for him to use me without me realizing it?

“Do you promise you’re not just trying to trick me?” I ask. “Or use me for some motive I’m not aware of.”

“I’m not,” Kane states. “You know my intentions – this is to help you get stronger so the pack trusts you.”

Still, I eye him, waiting for him to say the two words I’m looking for. Taking the hint, Kane rolls his eyes as he sighs.

“I promise,” he presses out. “This time we’re both in on this. Together.”

Okay. That’s at least reassuring, even if I still hate this whole thing and his initial claims.

After all, he’s right. It kills me to admit it, but I know accepting his help is the only way to better

my

wolf.

If the pack members think I’m unworthy or weak then that’s fine – I don’t care. But I do care about the wellbeing of my wolf and giving her the best chance.

Finally, I release a breath through my nose.

“Okay,” I agree.
