Evelyn’s POV
The room continues to stay eerily quiet as everyone waits to see what Blanca will do. I can see the wheels turning in her brain as she tries to figure out what to do or say. Or she seems to plead with Kane through the softness of her eyes, but he’s not deterred.
“Bianca,” he warns.
Finally, this seems to do the trick and Bianca slowly rises from the chair, a little wobbly. She steps away and goes
to take another seat.
Once she’s out of the way, Kane gestures toward the chair, looking at my expectantly.
“Evelyn,” he insists.
Catching his meaning, I go to the chair and take my seat, feeling the heat of Bianca’s hateful stare as I get settled. Meanwhile, Kane comes to join me, so calm as if the whole ordeal didn’t happen.
But it did…and I’m still so surprised that he stepped in and made Bianca move. However, that could have nothing to do with me, really.
Maybe he just values the traditions of the pack and wants to stay true to expectations. Therefore, he wanted to make it clear that the Luna must sit there.
It’s not like he actually wants me beside him or anything serious. It’s simply that he wants to make a statement at both the meetings and the upcoming event. As Luna, standing beside him is my place – plain and simple.
Finally, Kane calls the meeting to order.
“Our main concern for this meeting is discussing the town’s midsummer celebration that will be held next week,” Kane announces. “As you all know, this is to honor the local businesses and how crucial they are to our town. We also honor all members of our pack and community.”
I blink at this information. I had no idea that was the reason behind the event and I’ve never heard of any other pack honoring its members so thoroughly. It’s admirable.
“Everyone is expected to pull their weight and help with the event. Whether you volunteer for a booth or want to run security,” Kane continues. “We all need to help out.”
I’m nodding as others make sounds of acceptance and understanding.
“I can do security,” a man- who I believe is named Garrick – states.
Kane nods. “That would be great.”
“I don’t mind setting up or prepping booths,” a woman in the corner says. “Or cleaning up after.”
From there, other people continue to state what they intend to do. As I am less experienced, though, I’m not sure what’s best for me to volunteer for.
“What should I do?” I ask Kane as an assistant jots down a list of names and jobs. “Is there something specific I should be focused on?”
“Your only role is to make your rounds and greet our community throughout the event,” Kane states. “We’ll be going around together.”

Ah, now his previous comment made sense. We’d have to greet the public together, presenting like some power couple as we worked the crowd.
Bianca scoffs, sneering at me. “That’s ridiculous. She should be pulling her weight and doing more,” she complains. “If she really wants to prove herself as Luna then she should be putting in the work just like the rest of us. Or…does she truly just not care about the pack? Or the community we’re supposed to be honoring?”
The room is quiet other than a few murmurs, everyone’s gazes bouncing back and forth between Bianca and me.
“Clearly, I care,” I state, my voice dipping low. “Seeing as I asked how I could help.”
Bianca’s eyes narrow on me.
“I’m more than happy to do whatever I can,” I continue to press. I then scan the room, my eyes eventually landing back on Kane.
“Maybe I could ask Diana and some of the other nurses to come and help out,” I offer. “If they have extra people available, we could have them run a booth with medical services for emergencies.”
At my suggestion, Kane’s eyes briefly blink in surprise before he nods. “I think that’s a great idea.”
It’s my turn to also be startled, but I try not to let it show. Not when Kane’s approval clearly upsets Bianca.
