Chapter 22
“Mr. Grant, sorry I’m late,” Leo said.
“It’s okay,” William replied, his tone still calm and indifferent.
Leo looked up, surprised to see Queenie. “Queenie?”
“Leo, I didn’t expect you to come,” Queenie said with a smile.
Leo smiled back. “I didn’t know you were my junior, either.”
Their easy conversation said it all.
Jessica felt like she’d been slapped in the face multiple times.
Vivian was genuinely shocked. She never thought Queenie actually worked at the N&Q Institute of Medicine.
“Fine, do whatever you want. So disappointing,” William muttered and then stormed off.

Queenie looked down. ‘Mr. Grant probably doesn’t want to see me anymore. I really let him down. He believed in me once and put so much effort into training me, but I disappointed him,’ she thought.
Everyone knew about William’s bad temper, so once he left, people relaxed. They quickly crowded around Queenie and Leo. After all, the N&Q Institute of Medicine was where everyone wanted to work.

After chatting for a bit, Queenie made up an excuse and slipped out of the lounge. Once she was outside, she let out a big breath. She hadn’t been around that many people in forever, and it still made her pretty nervous.
“Whew,” Leo said, coming out behind her. “Everyone in your department is so friendly. I can barely keep up.”
Queenie smiled.
Right then, Leo’s phone rang. He checked it. “Let’s go. Mr. Grant wants to see us in his office.”
“Us?” Queenie blinked. ‘Mr. Grant doesn’t even want to see me. Why would he ask for me?’ she thought.
Leo chuckled. “Yep, both of us. Come on.”
Queenie wasn’t totally convinced, but she followed Leo anyway.
Leo knocked on the office door and said, “Mr. Grant, we’re here.”
Queenie walked in behind him.
William shot them a glance. “Take a seat,”
‘Mr. Grant, I’m sorry,” Queenie said, working up her nerve and bowing to him,
William gave her an annoyed look. “Oh, so you do know how to apologize?” he snapped.
Queenie kept her head down and stayed quiet. Anything she said right now would sound like making excuses.

“Look at you. Nathan introduced you to me, and I treated you like my star student. What did you do? Dropped out to get married. Fine, whatever. But seriously, look at who you married?” William’s voice got more heated as he went on.
Leo looked surprised. He glanced over at Queenie. ‘She’s married?’ he thought.
“Mr. Grant, sorry I let you down,” Queenie said. She couldn’t think of anything else to say besides sorry.
William looked at her and sighed, clearly disappointed. “Alright, I didn’t call you here to yell at you. There’s a conference next month. Get ready. You’re both joining me.”
Queenie was caught off guard. She was mostly shocked that William would actually want her to attend.
William looked at her again. “When you get back, prepare properly. Don’t let me down this time.”
“I won’t,” Queenie said, determined not to disappoint him again.
“Here are the topics for the conference. Take these home and study them,” William said, handing Leo a stack of papers, and Leo took them.
The three of them talked a little more about the research. Then Queenie and Leo left.

“What a coincidence! You graduated in 2005. That makes you my junior,” Leo said, clearly happy about it.
Queenie smiled a little. “I never knew you were the senior everyone always talks about, Mr. Grant’s top student.”
“No, that’s not me,” Leo said, shaking his head and glancing at Queenie. “I’m definitely not his favorite.”
Queenie lowered her eyes.
Leo’s smile faded as he realized something. “I didn’t expect you were already married.”
“I’m getting divorced. The papers are being processed,” Queenie said honestly.
Leo looked surprised at first, but then something hopeful flashed in his eyes.
