Chapter 10
My eyes stung for a second.
I took a breath, took the other ring from Jenna, and slid it onto Declan’s finger.
As the ring went on, he curled his finger just slightly, hooking mine.
Applause filled the room.
I looked up, wanting to see his face.
The cathedral doors opened again. Two uniformed police officers walked in. Trent followed behind
them.
“That’s him.” Trent pointed straight at Declan, who was still holding my hand on the altar. “That man illegally entered my wedding, took my bride, caused a disturbance, and sabotaged a lawful ceremony. I want you to arrest him right now.”
He looked around and added, “I paid for this wedding. Every flower, every plate, every invitation.
Every penny came from me.”
“Half the city’s most important people are here to witness it.”
The officers looked at Declan, then at the crowd. One of them asked, flat and professional, “Is what Mr. Harrison saying true?”
The church went dead silent.
Even Trent’s own family wouldn’t speak up for him now.
Finally, I spoke. “Officers, this wedding is between me and my husband. There’s no problem here.”
All eyes swung to me.
“And who is your husband?” the officer asked.
I turned my head. Looked at the man beside me, the one who’d held my hand the whole time, quiet as a mountain. “Him. Declan Sterling.”
Trent’s body went rigid, like he’d been punched in the chest.
It wasn’t rage or grief. It was a blank, disbelieving shock.

He’d never imagined that one day I… the woman who couldn’t live without him would stand next to someone else. And say another man’s name with that kind of certainty.
I nodded to Jenna.
She pulled a file from my bag and handed it to the officers.
“Here’s the venue rental agreement. The flower purchase receipts. The catering contract. Every document is signed by me.”
“Mr. Harrison helped with some decorating. But this wedding, from start to finish, was mine.”
Trent’s face went pale white.
His family section erupted.
The groomsmen couldn’t hold back anymore.
Tyler ran up first, pointing at me, his voice shaking. “Sloane, do you have no conscience? Trent pulled allnighters for this wedding. And now you’re saying it’s yours and some other guy’s? What do you take him for, a free party planner?”
Carson jumped in too. “Yeah! Trent gave you everything. And you turn around and marry his enemy and use all his hard work to do it. Sloane, you’re cold.”
Trent just stood there.
He didn’t argue. Didn’t yell. Didn’t even cry anymore.
He just stared at me. “Sloane… didn’t I come back?”
“You’ve been with me ten years. When have I ever let you down?”
“Yeah, I’ve been a total piece of crap lately. I lost my damn mind. But you know I’ve always had you in my heart. You know me better than anybody.”
He sucked in a breath, his voice unsteady,
“But look at him, Declan. Do you know what he did last week? I won that Fairmont Bay project, and he’s been holding a grudge. You think he’ll be good to you? He’s just using you to get back at me.
He reached out his hand, palm up.
The way he always did when I was mad and he wanted to smooth things over.
