That hand hung in the air, trembling.

One second. Two. Three.

Then I heard my own voice, flat and dead calm. “Trent. It’s too late.”

All the anger, the hurt, the begging… everything drained from his face at once.

The officers took the file, flipped through it, then looked at Trent.

“Mr. Harrison, she’s provided full proof that she arranged this wedding herself. There’s no illegal

entry or disruption. You’re claiming bigamy, what legal relationship do you have with this

woman?”

Trent opened his mouth. Nothing came out.

The officer asked, “Have you and she ever gotten a marriage certificate?”

Silence.

“A signed engagement agreement?”

Silence.

“Then on what basis do you call her ‘your’ bride?”

“Basis?”

Trent frantically pulled up photos and texts on his phone and shoved them at the officer.

“Isn’t this enough?” His voice got hard again, like he’d found one last lifeline. “We were together for ten years. These messages, these pictures, don’t they prove she was mine?”

The officer glanced at them, but before he could respond, I slowly pulled out the marriage

certificate. I held it out to the officer. And to Trent.

“Look closely, Trent.”

My voice carried clear to every ear in the room. “Declan and I already got our marriage certificate.”

“Today’s wedding isn’t bigamy. It’s a celebration.””

Trent’s face went from red to white to gray in a heartbeat.

His eyes locked on those two names side by side on the certificate, Sloane Bennett and Declan

Sterling.

His pupils lost focus.

“You… when did you…”

The officer frowned. “Mr. Harrison, her marital status is completely legal. There’s no bigamy here. You filed a false police report. Next time, we will take action.”

Then they turned and left.

Trent stood there like a tree struck by lightning. Burned through.

He stared at me, his lips barely moving.

“Sloane… this wedding… I… I promised you this…”

Tyler finally stepped up and tugged his sleeve. “Trent… let’s go. They already got the certificate…”

Trent didn’t move. His voice came out raw.

“Sloane… I said you get the wedding and she gets the certificate. But I didn’t go through with it.”

“I got there… and I thought about the way you looked at me. Your smile. And I knew I couldn’t sign it

with her. So I stalled.”

His throat bobbed.

“Ten years… and when you signed with someone else, you didn’t hesitate at all?”

I laughed. “You stalled because you were worried how it’d look to Aria’s family. Not because you suddenly grew a conscience.”

I looked at his ashen face and spoke each word clearly. “I didn’t hesitate because you never gave me

a reason to.”

Declan took my hand and led me down from the altar,

As he passed Trent, he leaned in and said quietly, “Sorry. The certificate is mine. The wedding is

mine.”

He glanced at me. “And so is she.’

I smiled and didn’t argue.

The truth was, my story with Declan started even earlier than the one with Trent.
