Chapter 241 Protective InstinctsÂ
He had the same energy as a politician who could turn cold the second the deal changed.Â
The moment he realized his past had no overlap with Maya’s, he came straight to warn her without a second’s hesitation. Seriously. This was too much.Â
Maya made two muffled little sounds, then fired back without backing down. “You idiot, why are you threatening an ordinary civilian for no reason?”Â
“I hate you.”Â
Edric had just been gifted the lovely new title of idiot, but he wasn’t offended. He only found her strangely entertaining. His laugh was soft, with a trace of coldness underneath. “Maya, once you get onto that island. I hope you won’t come crying and begging me to let you out.”Â
Maya was speechless.Â
Ha. Threatened again.Â
Maya lost every scrap of sleepiness. She pulled the door open and, sure enough, saw George crouched outside, fiddling with something on his phone.Â
She immediately lifted her phone. “George, Edric said he was going to make me pay.”Â
Her voice was crisp, and the tattling was obvious.Â
George took the phone from her and patted her on the head.Â
“Go sleep first,” He said.Â
Then, he took the phone.Â
“Good evening, Edric.Â
“Why are you threatening her?”Â
The boy’s voice was as soft as ever, but beneath it sat a thick layer of vigilance and cold.Â
The moment George spoke, Edric could feel that overflowing, nowhere-to-put protectiveness spilling outÂ
of him.Â
“After the New Year, I’ll be the one arranging her safety and the rules after she enters the island,” Edric said flatly. “Do you think I’d threaten her for fun?”Â
George pressed his lips together. He hadn’t expected that topic, and his heart sank slightly.Â
“She’s still a child.” His voice cooled. “What gives you the right to send her to that island? Why don’t you send Alfred instead?”Â
“Alfred will go too. And…” Edric’s tone carried a faint, strange scrutiny as he slowly arrived at a conclusion. “Have you lost your mind?”Â

He actually dared to challenge him.Â
Every time George saw him before, he was like a mouse spotting a cat-gone without a trace.Â
This was the first time in his life George had ever dared talk back to him like this.Â
“You never had the courage to face me before. Or rather, you’ve never stood up to me for any of your younger brothers.”Â
Edric spoke unhurriedly and quickly pieced the connection together. “She told me earlier that she killed someone. It was for you, wasn’t it?”Â
She was unexpectedly bold.Â
He really had misjudged her.Â
Looking at it now, she did have considerable value. At the very least, several of his younger brothers cared about her more than he’d expected.Â
George was too irritated to keep talking to him.Â
After hanging up, he found Maya still standing in the doorway, staring at him eagerly.Â
He walked over and hugged her tight, like a lioness guarding her cub, as if he wanted to hide her whole body away. “Are you going to the island?”Â
Without waiting for her answer, he started rambling. His tone turned pitiful, then quickly dropped into something gloomy, his expression going dark. “It’s dangerous there. Everyone will want to use you and bully you.”Â
Maya stared at him.Â
She had to admire how insanely fast he was at switching faces. “I caught a cold.”Â
“George.”Â
George froze for a beat, then shot to his feet. “I’ll go buy medicine.Â
He was still young himself and had no experience taking care of children. His voice carried a flustered, helpless panic.Â
Maya’s nose felt awful, so she nodded.Â
She drank the medicine and slept for a while, but the cold still felt miserable.Â
By night, Maya couldn’t sleep. She was thinking about the bug that had appeared after she reloaded.Â
The space-time turbulence… where exactly would it send her?Â
George stayed in her room, leaning back in the chair beside the bed. Seeing that she clearly had no intention of sleeping, he grew visibly uneasy. “Were you scared? Is that why you can’t sleep?”Â
Maya thought he was getting a little neurotic.Â

Chapter 41 Protective InstinctsÂ
“No. I’m just not sleepy.”Â
After all, once she thought about what she was about to face, not even a pig could have fallen asleepÂ
Maya couldn’t help pressing her head against George’s arm and hugging it anxiously, her eyes locked on the time.Â
For some reason, George grew restless too and kept watch beside her.Â
On the nightstand, the alarm clock’s second hand crawled forward, tick by tick.Â
Maya felt as if every image in front of her had been magnified. In a low voice, she said, “…I think I’m getting dizzy.”Â
The instant the hand pointed fully to twelve.Â
Darkness swallowed Maya whole.Â
The only thing left by her car was George’s panicked voice, getting farther and farther away, blurrier and blurrier, as if separated by a thick wall of water.Â
Then, she couldn’t hear anything at all.Â
“Number 4, go find some food. While you’re at it, check if any supplies were dropped off.”Â
“Okay.”Â
Number 4 lowered his head, shifted his feet, and answered softly.Â
There were plenty of fruits here to pick.Â
The people in charge of this deadly survival game constantly monitored their movements. Sometimes, afraid they might starve to death, they tossed down a little food to make sure no one died from hungerÂ
The boy thought about it while dragging his feet forward, one slow step at a time.Â
Then, something fell on him.Â
Quite literally. A chubby little girl fell from the sky and slammed him into the ground.Â
