Chapter 242 The Girl from the Void

“Fallen from the sky” wasn’t quite right.

白

Finped

If she’d really fallen from above, then with that kind of drop, both of them would’ve died.

But he hadn’t been crushed to death. Which meant instead of falling from the sky, she was more like something randomly dumped out of an invisible space.

His frail body was knocked flat onto the ground.

The boy tried to shove her off, only to realize her face was pale and she looked like she was in bad shape.

Pushing himself upright, he didn’t try to throw her off again. Instead, he carefully looked this sudden stranger over.

The girl had her eyes shut, her hair plastered across her face. She looked almost dead.

Number 4 pressed his lips together. He should’ve left her here to fend for herself. Once you entered this elimination ground, everyone was your enemy.

But something was off about her.

She had appeared out of nowhere.

That one unusual detail made him give up the idea of abandoning her. Instead, with some effort, he dragged her away.

Dizzy.

Sick.

Maya wanted to throw up. It felt like something had yanked her away out of nowhere, sending her dropping and spinning through weightlessness.

Her vision blurred. When she opened her eyes, her expression was dazed.

This wasn’t the winter she knew. Above her was an almost transparent blue sky, and sunlight filtered through layered treetops, casting mottled shadows across her face.

The smell of grass and trees was so strong it stung her nose, The plants around her were absurdly tall.

She lay on the ground and stared at the leaves for a few seconds.

Was this some kind of tropical region?

Maya clearly remembered that it had still been winter where she came from.

A little blankly, she wondered if she’d really time-traveled to the Jancsic period and was about to throw

hands with dinosaurs.

Maya sat up and instinctively looked down at what she was wearing

93

It was exactly what she’d been wearing a moment ago.

Looks like her whole body had been thrown into this time and space.

Then she remembered George’s panicked voice in her ear, and her heart sank hard.

“System, don’t tell me I just vanished right in front of George?”

Surely it wasn’t that stupid.

The system said, “No. From his point of view, you probably just passed out, then stopped breathing for two minutes.

“Besides, time moves differently in the two places.

“You could stay here for months, and from his point of view, you’d wake up a minute or two later.”

Stopped breathing for a few minutes?

Maya complained, “…That’s even worse!!”

She didn’t even want to imagine the look on George’s face when that happened.

“You’re awake?”

A girl’s voice came from behind her.

Maya turned her head on instinct and found herself staring at a group of more than 10 kids.

They all looked around her age, but every one of them was dusty, filthy, and grimy, like a pack of little beggars.

She tilted her head slightly and let out an unconscious little sigh. “Wow.”

There weren’t many kids her age around her in daily life, so seeing a whole group at once felt strangely novel.

“You got thrown in here, too, right?” The girl stroked her chin and muttered to herself, “Still, that’s weird. The number for this round was supposed to be fixed. How did they suddenly cram one more person in halfway through?”

That was… a lot to unpack.

Thrown in.

Number of people.

Crammed in.

Maya silently filed those words away.

What she needed most right now was information, and the best way to get it was to let everyone else do the

talking first.

“Whatever. Forget it.” The girl seemed to make up her mind and lifted her chin. “We saved you, so for now, you’re with us. Got a problem with that?”

Maya was very obedient. “Nope.”

So, what exactly did “with us” even mean?

Was this some kind of modern-day tribe?

Did she need to grab a bow and wooden spear and fight side by side with a bunch of wild kids, defending their home against invaders from other tribes?

“So, we’re together…” she said, testing the waters. “What are your names?”

Names first. Then she could slowly fish for information. She needed to figure out exactly where she’d been dragged.

“We don’t have names.” The girl thought for a moment. “You can call me Button.”

The kids here didn’t have names.

Most of the time, they called one another by cold serial numbers.

Though some of the fussier kids would give themselves names to use.

No names…

That sounded like a bunch of orphaned children had been trafficked here.

“What’s your name?” Button asked.

Maya sat up a little straighter, but she didn’t give her real name. “You can call me Big Sis.”

Button clearly didn’t really understand what that title meant. She pouted. “Whatever. Your life was saved by us, so you have to move with us.”

Maya answered casually, but her gaze had already swept across their surroundings.

This stretch of forest was huge. In the distance, she could vaguely see light glinting off a coastline. Sea on every side.

This was an island.

A bunch of kids. A deserted island.

That combination sounded a lot like something Alfred had mentioned before: the slaughter ground the Clarks prepared for their children.

Then, what about time? What point in time had she been sent to?

Maya got to her feet and decided to go talk to a few of the kids.
