Chapter 85 Questionable Literature

People like that belong in prison!

“Rip out his heart and guts?” Annie blinked, a little shaken by the vivid metaphor.

Fraiched

“Yeah.” The little girl’s expression grew animated. “Like draining your bone marrow, using you as a blood bag, abusing you, throwing you in jail, and telling you you’re not even worth a finger compared to his one true love.”

Maya loved this kind of dramatic fiction, so she could list off tropes like a pro.

“And then later, he regrets everything. Totally devastated. Wishes he were dead.

“When that happens, I’ll check the weather forecast in advance, pick a stormy day with thunder and pouring rain, and have him apologize to you in the rain.”

Maya rambled on. Annie had never heard stories like this before and couldn’t help but laugh.

But as she kept listening, the smile slowly faded. She stared at Maya’s slightly excited face and couldn’t help asking,

“What exactly have you been reading lately?”

Maya replied, “Sleeping Beauty!”

Her voice turned bright and cheerful.

Just mentioning them made her seem soft and adorable again.

So she was still just a kid who liked cartoons.

“And what else?”

“Wait here!”

Maya dashed back to her classroom, then quickly returned with a stack of her favorite books to share.

Annie glanced at the covers.

They were all romance novels that were definitely not age-appropriate.

She stared at them for two seconds, her fist tightening ever so slightly. Then she turned, walked back into her classroom, took out a beautifully printed fashion magazine from her designer bag, and shoved it into Maya’s hands.

“You’re not reading those anymore.” Annie confiscated the books with a gentle but firm smile. “They’re banned.”

Maya was confused. “Huh?”

Annie was a rather traditional girl, and she was raised in a prominent family, so she still carried some old- fashioned views.

Chapter 85 Questionable Literature

To her, this kind of stuff was practically toxic.

Don’t corrupt children like this!

Maya, who had just lost her beloved over-the-top drama novels, was baffled.

She had opened her heart, only to be treated like this.

Holding the magazine, she muttered under her breath, “It’s not like I even need to read this stuff right

now…”

Annie looked at her. That listless expression didn’t seem to be just because her books were taken away.

She twirled a strand of her hair around her finger. “So, who upset you this time? You look miserable. Go tell your brother.”

She said it half-jokingly.

The kid’s emotions were written all over her face.

Other than something extreme like a family going bankrupt, Annie couldn’t imagine what kind of problems girls like them would even have.

“I…” Maya had come to talk to Annie in the first place. Out of everyone she knew, Annie was the only one she could really open up to.

Leaning against the railing, she carefully chose her words. “There’s someone very close to me. I always thought he was doing well. His family is wealthy, and even if it’s not perfect, it should still be a happy life.

“I was afraid that if I suddenly showed up, I’d disrupt everything.

“But now I feel like… he’s still not doing well at all.” That uncertainty left Maya feeling lost.

“Oh, you don’t get it.” Annie lightly tapped her forehead with her fan, smiling. “You’re just assuming he’s happy. What does that even prove?”

She didn’t really understand complicated emotional issues either, but she had always been someone who acted decisively.

“Instead of overthinking, why not just go see him?” Her smile softened, her gaze turning more serious. “Only when you’ve seen it with your own eyes and asked him directly will you actually feel at ease. Right?”

One of Annie’s life principles was simple: if you want something, go for it, even if the process is awkward or uncomfortable.

Because the endless hesitation and overthinking were the real torture.

Maya figured Annie was right.

If she didn’t see for herself, she’d always be stuck guessing.

And Lawrence might still be trapped in that invisible suffering, whether she was there or not.

“I understand now.” Maya straightened up. Her voice was still childish, but there was a new firmness to it.

“Thank you, Annie.”

“You’re welcome.”

“But Maya…” Annie drawled gently, a teasing glint in her eyes. “You’re not in love, are you? If your brother finds out, he’ll lose his mind.”

“Why would you think that?” Maya shook her head quickly. “Of course not. I’m still a kid.”

There was no way it was love. That was her brother!

Annie looked unconvinced. “Really?”

“Well, whatever.” She waved her fan lazily. “You should head back. Class is about to start.”

As long as it didn’t involve her, Annie enjoyed a bit of drama.

She was actually curious to see what Toby would look like losing control.

It would definitely be entertaining.

Meanwhile, completely unaware that he had become the topic of conversation, Toby had been in a very bad mood lately.
