Heather didn’t dare meet Elnora’s eyes. She was scared out of her wits.

She bit down hard on her lip, wanting to beg for mercy, but the moment she remembered what she’d just said about Elnora, her heart went numb.
She nodded stiffly, her voice trembling as she replied, “I understand.”
Once Elnora got her answer, she turned and headed upstairs.
Meanwhile, Heather stood in place, her face pale. She turned and saw her phone still on the table, so she walked over to grab it.
Stella never hung up the phone. She listened to the entire conversation as Elnora called Albert.
When Heather realized Stella was still on the line, she suddenly broke down and started crying.
“Ms. Taylor, what should I do now?” Heather sobbed.
Stella had no idea what to do either. She just thought Heather had been way too careless.
She never expected Elnora to overhear those words.
Stella let out a quiet sigh and tried to comfort Heather. “Heather, I’ll call Albert.”
Heather’s voice trembled. “But Albert already said it’s up to Ms. Finley to decide what happens!”
Stella had heard Albert say that, too.
She rubbed her brow, fell silent for a moment, and was just about to speak when Heather quietly asked, “Ms. Taylor, I know how to do a lot of things. Didn’t you say before that if I ever got fired, you’d let me work for you?”
Heather pleaded, “Can I work with you?”
Stella was caught off guard by Heather’s words. She was struggling to keep herself afloat. Even her hotel stay was paid for with the money Albert gave her the other night.
Ever since she broke up with Albert, the Taylor Family’s attitude toward her had gotten worse and worse.
She was just an illegitimate child, with no standing in the Taylor Family. She was barely scraping by.
Stella didn’t even have a place of her own, so there was no need for a housekeeper.
Stella kept her own troubles to herself and reassured Heather softly, “Heather, don’t worry. I’ll set you up with something. But the pay won’t be as good as what you got with Albert.”
Hope sparked in Heather’s chest at Stella’s promise. “Thanks, Ms. Taylor. As long as I have a job, that’s good enough for me.”

Stella hummed softly, said a few comforting words, then ended the call.

Heather rushed back to her room and started gathering all her stuff. After she finished packing, she shot a glance upstairs.
She couldn’t help letting her mind wander, secretly hoping for a miracle. ‘If I went upstairs right now and told Elnora that even if she fired me, I could land another job in a heartbeat, her expression would be something
to see.’
But that was just a fantasy playing out in her mind. She didn’t have the nerve to mess with Elnora.
When Elnora stood at the top of the stairs, towering over her and announcing she was fired, Heather’s knees nearly buckled.
She glanced at the clock. She only had a minute left before the time Elnora gave her to leave.
Heather grabbed her suitcase and rushed out of the building. She was terrified that if she were even a minute late, Elnora would come downstairs and give her a look that would make her wish she were dead.
Heather walked so fast that by the time she reached the entrance, Albert was pulling up to the apartment complex.
As Albert drove into the complex, he shot a glance at Heather.
When Heather saw Albert, it was like she’d just spotted a lifeline.
“Sir, you’re finally back!” Heather called out, her voice trembling with relief.
Albert gave Heather, who was hauling her luggage, a brief, indifferent glance.
As soon as the gate to the complex opened, he drove straight into the basement.
Heather paused, pressing her lips together tightly. That was when she remembered, Elnora had already given Albert a heads-up about firing her.
Albert had scolded her once before, and there was no way he’d let her stay this time.
Heather had no choice but to leave, her head bowed in defeat.
Albert parked his car in the basement, got out, and headed straight inside.
Elnora wasn’t in the living room. So, he walked upstairs, went up to Elnora’s bedroom door, raised his hand, and knocked.
Elnora opened the door, showing no sign of surprise when Albert appeared.
She didn’t bother to ask why he was there, just gave him a cold, detached look.
They’d barely crossed paths in the past few days.
Elnora’s face was just as cold and aloof as ever, which put Albert in a bad mood.

He forced a smile, masking his irritation. “So, what did Heather do to piss you off? Spill it.”

Elnora looked at him calmly, “It’s not that she upset me. But honestly, I don’t need a nanny who gossips about her boss behind their back. There’s really no reason to keep her around.”
Albert raised an eyebrow. He hadn’t expected Heather to be at it again.
Last time, Elnora caught Heather calling Stella, and Stella ended up begging Albert to let Heather stay. He never thought Heather would get caught doing the same thing again.
Elnora locked eyes with Albert, her gaze cold and aloof. “Mr. Campbell, are you seriously here to pick a fight with me over a housekeeper?”
Albert couldn’t help but laugh, a mix of disbelief and annoyance on his face. “Seriously, I’m just checking in on you. I’m not here to give you a hard time, am I?”
He added, “Ms. Finley, you have wronged me here.”
Elnora replied indifferently, “Thanks for your concern, Mr. Campbell.”
Albert felt like something was stuck in his chest after hearing her words.
He felt uneasy, and his eyes locked on her. “Don’t mention it.”
After a brief pause, he asked, “So, now that the housekeeper is gone, should I handle hiring someone new, or do you want to take care of the interviews yourself?”
Elnora replied, “I’ll take care of it.”
Albert gave a quick nod. “Sure.”
The conversation came to an abrupt end. This time, Albert turned to leave before Elnora could even close the door.
“I’m heading out. Meeting up for drinks with Benedict and the guys tonight,” he said.
Elnora nodded. “Have fun tonight, Mr. Campbell.”
With that, she closed the door.
Albert abruptly froze mid-step, wanting to turn around and catch a glimpse of Elnora’s expression. But before he could, she’d already closed the door.
He didn’t even get to see her face.
Albert took a deep breath, feeling a surge of irritation rise inside him.
Just then, his phone rang. It was Kaelin. “You haven’t been home for days. Is Ms. Finley excited to see you?”
Albert’s expression turned stiff.

Excited?’ he scoffed to himself. ‘Not at all.’

She was just as cold as ever, acting like her husband was nothing but a ghost in her life.

Albert took a deep breath, feeling utterly invisible in front of Elnora. His spirits sank to rock bottom.
But this was exactly what he’d asked for before. He’d always wanted a wife like Elnora.
Albert wanted someone independent, strong, and not someone who clung to him every second. Even when things got tough, she had the guts to pull herself out of trouble.
Elnora was everything he’d ever wanted in a wife.
But for the first time, he found himself wishing she wasn’t always so stiff. If only she could let herself rely on him, too, now and then, that would be much better.
Kaelin waited for a reply from Albert, but when he got nothing, he sensed something was up. He asked quietly, “She didn’t just totally ignore you, did she?”
Albert was silent. Noticing this, Kaelin chuckled as if he’d caught onto something. “Dude, did she just shut the door in your face?”
