Darkness Tests Inner Strength — Blake Sanders 3

Chapter 3

Three days later, I met the delivery guy at a coffee shop.

The shop was filled with the aroma of coffee. I listlessly stirred my caramel macchiato, watching the light rain. outside the window, feeling a bit dazed.

It wasn’t until a figure sat down opposite me that I snapped back to reality.

Looking up, I met a face so handsome it could make gods and mortals alike despair.

He was wearing a gray tracksuit, a world apart from the Uber Eats uniform he had on that day.

A smile gleamed in his eyes as he asked softly, “Miss Williams, don’t recognize me?”

I quickly cleared my throat, forcing composure. “I do! So, what should I call you?”

He sat down opposite me, his long fingers naturally picking up the menu. “Ryan Scott.”

A nice name.

I pulled a supplementary card from my bag and slid it across the table. “The PIN is six eights. Go buy whatever you like, sports cars, watches, whatever.”

“In one week, we’ll go to the marriage registry.”

Ryan glanced briefly at the card but didn’t take it. Instead, he looked up and met my eyes directly. “Miss Williams, are you truly set on marrying a delivery guy like me, who has nothing?”

My heart clenched, and his challenge sparked a stubborn defiance in me. “What, having second thoughts? Don’t dare to marry me after all?”

He chuckled softly and pushed the card back towards me.

“What do you mean?” I asked, confused.

He smiled faintly. “A man doesn’t spend a woman’s money. One week from now, at the marriage registry.”

I nodded. “Okay.”

After parting ways with Ryan, it was already evening.

When I returned to the villa, the family was having dinner.

Alexander was there too, sitting right next to Sophie.

My appearance instantly wiped the smiles off everyone’s faces.

The lively conversation that had filled the room moments before plummeted into an awkward silence.

David was the first to react, waving me over. “Emily, come join us for dinner.”

I shook my head. “Not hungry. I’m going upstairs.”

As I turned to leave, my mother suddenly stopped me. “Emily, there’s something we need to discuss with you.”

I stopped. “What is it?”

She walked up to me, hesitating for a moment before speaking. “Your father and I have discussed it, and we’ve decided to formalize your sister and Alexander’s

engagement.”

I looked up at Alexander.

He instinctively avoided my gaze.

Seeing this, I laughed coldly.

My mother grabbed my hand. “I know you and Alexander have been close since childhood, but feelings require mutual consent; they can’t be forced. Mom will definitely make it up to you later…”

I quietly pulled my hand back, interrupting her. “Enough, Mom! Don’t say any more! I have no objections.”

“May my sister and brother-in-law have a long and happy marriage, locked together for a lifetime.”

I hadn’t expected Alexander to follow me.

Now, he held my wrist tightly, refusing to let go.

I frowned. “Alexander, what do you think you’re doing?”

Hedowered his gaze slightly and said softly, “I know you

said those things because you’re angry with me.”

“You must be feeling really hurt right now, aren’t you?”

Was I hurt?

It seemed… not really all that much.

At most, I felt it was ironic.

I used to think that at least Alexander was one person Sophie couldn’t steal away from me.

Two years ago, when I first returned, Sophie was obsessed with framing me for various things, painting

herself as the victim.

Back then, no matter how I tried to explain, no one was willing to believe me.

Except for Alexander.

He would hold my hand tightly and say, “Emily, I believe you. I’ll always be on your side.”

He would also maintain his distance from Sophie because

she deliberately mimicked my daily style of dress and the way I spoke.

I thought this childhood friend, who had sworn since we were kids to marry no one but me, who cared for me so attentively, would remain steadfast and unwavering.

But in the end, he still chose to hurt me, just like the others.

“Emily, when will you stop this? If there really was something between me and Sophie, what place would you have?”

“No wonder your parents prefer their adopted daughter! Who could stand your prickly, defensive attitude?”

“If I so much as say an extra word to Sophie, you make a huge scene, suspicious and paranoid like a shrew!”

“Fine, I’ll tell you now. Sophie is gentler, more

understanding, more attractive to me than you are. Are you satisfied now?”

Back then, I loved him so deeply that even hearing such huötful words, my first reaction wasn’t anger, but

doubting whether I was truly in the wrong.

It was only later that I realized Alexander always claimed to dislike Sophie but never actually refused her increasingly intimate and boundary-crossing behaviors.

It was his inconsistency between words and actions that drove me to breakdown.

The fault was his, not mine.

Seeing me silent, Alexander thought he had hit a nerve.

He sighed lightly and continued on his own. “Emily, we grew up together and have many beautiful memories. I don’t want us to end up cutting ties completely.”

“Here’s the deal: if you behave and stop targeting Sophie all the time, I might consider… letting you stay by my side as my lover. After all, we’re physically compatible, and things are harmonious in that department.”

I looked at him in disbelief, shocked by his shameless

words.

Alexander, seeing my wide eyes, mistook my shock for6:56

pleasant surprise and was unable to speak. He smugly added, “But you have to promise me to behave from now on and not cause any more trouble for Sophie…”

I couldn’t take it anymore. I forcefully shook off his hand and shouted, unable to contain myself, “Get lost!”
