Chase was so angry his chest ached. He couldn’t believe Tracy would use this situation to insult them. Despicable! But he figured these petty, underhanded tricks were all she was capable of.

As the paper was passed around, the gasps of amazement were endless, all of them praising Tracy.

Yvonne came to hand in her test just in time to hear the praise. She gripped her paper tightly. Tracy was stealing the show again. How infuriating!
The proctor quickly graded Yvonne’s test. This time, she was more than ten points behind Tracy.
Yvonne refused to accept it. Her eyes red, she looked at Waylon. “I think you’ve made a mistake. How could I possibly score lower than Tracy? Please check it again. You might have missed something, right?”
She would never admit she was inferior to Tracy. Tracy was supposed to be her foil; she could not surpass her. So what if she was a Cloud University student? She was just an undergrad. How could she compete with a Ph.D. student?
Chase backed her up. “That’s right! I also question your judgment. So what if Tracy is a Cloud University student? Our Yvonne is a Ph.D. candidate from Northville University! How could she possibly do worse than an undergrad?”
Waylon shot Chase a sideways glance. “You two are really stubborn to the bitter end. Fine. We’ll use the same method. The public isn’t blind. Let’s have everyone look at Yvonne’s paper and see who is truly the less capable of the two.”
He passed her test around. The crowd began to murmur.
Suddenly, an older man in the crowd spoke up. “This Yvonne’s solution is decent, but compared to Tracy’s, it’s clearly a cut below. Yvonne used a standard, common method. Tracy’s was entirely original. Personally, I support Tracy. I hope she’ll teach a class; I’d definitely attend.”
His words were a public slap in the face. Yvonne’s expression was grim, the corners of her eyes burning red. As more and more people voiced their support for Tracy, the faces of Yvonne and Chase grew darker.
