Chapter 163

Kane’s POV

Later that morning, I sat behind my desk, begrudgingly writing out letters to all of those who attended the gathering last evening. Not only did I want to put out my personal concern, but I wanted to establish my own eagerness to put an end to this awful rogue problem.

But before I did anything, I wrote out my first-drafted letter to the Alpha King, seeking his compliance on the matter. He’s known for a while now where I stand on the issue. Given the most recent

circumstances, I had a good feeling that he was willing to see reason.

As I got through the last letter, I sat back in my chair and allowed my thoughts to drift to a much more

pleasant thought.

Evelyn.

I’d unabashedly spent the majority of my morning revisiting the precious memories of our night together. Even now, my mouth curved into a fond smile as I recalled the perfect way her tight channel clenched around me.

All those sweet sounds she made were bouncing around in my head. I couldn’t remember the last time I felt such a sense of inner peace. Even after that horrible encounter with those demented, feral rogues.

Still, we were lucky that neither one of us was badly injured, and then things had taken an unexpected, heated turn. I had every intention of properly waking Evelyn up with my face between her thighs.

Just that one taste had been craving her like a lunatic.

Then, of course, it had all been rudely interrupted when Henri came banging on the goddamn door.

Evelyn had overheard the update and got ready to face the day as soon as the sun rose. She told me that her plan was to spend half of the day back down in the archives.

“There has to be some kind of cure for Wolfsbane,” she said earlier.

I didn’t want to be the one to tell her that such a natural cure didn’t exist. I couldn’t bear the look of disappointment that would have undoubtedly spread across her features. However, at the same time, I didn’t want to have her waste her valuable time on a fruitless venture.

Before she left our bedroom, I rested my hands on her shoulders. “I’m telling you this not to discourage you but to prepare you,” I started. “I’m fairly certain that there is no known cure for Wolfsbane.”

She pulled a look. Seeing her furrowed brow caused my chest to tighten. “Well… Then, I suppose a cure needs to be created.”

While I was impressed at how willing she was to jump back into work, I couldn’t help feeling worried for her, mentally speaking. It was one thing to train her to defend herself, but it was an entirely different situation to actually kill your opponent.

From what I could recall, her hands weren’t shaking, and she’d lost that glazed-over look in her eyes. My guess was that she was choosing to suppress what happened. It wasn’t exactly a healthy technique, but I could understand her disinterest in wanting to face it.

As the hours ticked by, I hadn’t heard a word from her. Glancing at the clock, I noticed that it was far past noon. And I had a pretty good feeling that neither one of us had eaten anything except a quick cup of black coffee in the kitchens.

I got up from my desk and slipped out of my office. Heading down to the archives, I noticed the soft glow of the lamp light from under the door. I quietly pushed the door open to find Evelyn surrounded by various towers of books.

I gently shut the door behind me, not wanting to scare her with my sudden intrusion. Evelyn let out a loud breath and sagged back against her wooden chair. The poor woman was covered in a thin sheen of dust.
