Queenie slowly let go of her phone, turned it off, and went to bed. She had no clue if Vincent had come back.
After drinking, her head was pounding, and she fell asleep the second her head hit the pillow. She used to think she was a light sleeper, waking up all the time when Vincent wasn’t there.
But now she realized it was all the worries keeping her up at night. With nothing weighing on her mind, she could sleep straight through till morning. Her sleep improved. Her energy was back, and even her complexion looked better.
There were no signs of anyone having slept on the other side of the bed, so Queenie figured Vincent probably hadn’t come home last night.
She washed up and headed downstairs, only to find Vincent having breakfast in the dining room. Queenie didn’t pay him any mind. It didn’t matter to her anymore whether he came back last night or this morning.
Vincent looked up at her. “This is for your birthday,” he said, holding out a gift box.
Queenie glanced at it, took the box, and set it down without a word. If Vivian hadn’t texted her, she would’ve been shocked that Vincent got her anything. He hadn’t given her a birthday gift in seven years.
‘Pathetic, really. After seven years, the only reason I got a present was because of my husband’s mistress, she thought.
Vincent saw she wasn’t going to open it, and he frowned. “You’re not even going to take a look?”
“Later, Queenie said, her voice flat. ‘What’s the point of a gift that’s late and forced?’ she thought.
“Mommy, is today your birthday? We should celebrate tonight. Let’s get you a big cake!” Archie said, sounding surprised.
“No need. My birthday was yesterday. It’s already over, Queenie replied, her voice and face calm, as if it were no big deal at all.
Archie looked even more shocked. ‘Yesterday was Mommy’s birthday, too?’ he thought.
“Mommy, why didn’t you tell me? I would’ve gotten you something!” Archie said, sounding a little reproachful.
Queenie gave a small smile. “I don’t really celebrate birthdays.”
“Mommy, are you mad?” Archie pouted, looking all sulky. “Why do you always get upset? I didn’t know it was your birthday yesterday, but Daddy already got you a present, didn’t he?”
“Did you not know, or did you forget? Queenie asked with a smile, though her eyes were blank.
Archie was left speechless.
I’m not mad. It’s just a birthday, nothing to get upset about. I’m full. You guys take your time,” Queenie said, putting down her fork. She grabbed Vincent’s gift and left the dining room.
Her calm reaction made both Vincent and Archie uncomfortable.
When Queenie got in the car, she opened the gift. It was a diamond bracelet, shiny and expensive-looking. She took a photo and texted Nathan.
Queenie: [Nathan, I’ll bring this to the institute. Can you help me sell it at the second-hand market?]
Nathan: [This diamond bracelet is really nice. Are you sure you want to sell it?]

‘esterday, Vivian sent her a photo of a diamond bracelet, too. They were probably bought as a pair. So what’s the difference etween this bracelet and used goods? Queenie thought.
Queenie put the bracelet aside and drove to the N&Q Institute of Medicine.
When she got there, she went straight to Nathan’s office, handed him the diamond bracelet, and then headed back to the
&D Department to work.
The anti-allergy drug was still being developed, so everyone was stressed. During lunch breaks, Queenie would browse
nline for home decorations.
Now and then, Vincent would get a payment notification, sometimes for tens of thousands and sometimes just a few housand.
